According to the current owner, who took over in 1976, the restaurant has seen generations of diners pass through its doors, including – if rumours are true – Nelson Mandela himself, who supposedly had a soft spot for the Shanghai steak, a dish still on the menu today. 

Swallows Inn offers a unique dining experience, blending classic Chinese dishes with Afro-Cantonese flair, a distinctive cuisine born from the Cantonese mineworkers who arrived in Johannesburg. Unlike traditional Cantonese fare, Afro-Cantonese cuisine at Swallows Inn features a higher proportion of red meat, gentler spicing, and flavours adapted to local palates. This makes it a standout in its genre and one of the best Chinese restaurants in South Africa for those seeking something truly authentic. 

While the restaurant may appear dated and would benefit from a facelift, Swallows Inn retains its charm and authenticity. The food, served in generous portions, more than makes up for the modest decor, with the Afro-Cantonese flavours offering a taste of culinary history and tradition.
