Sandton Road Closures During Eco-Mobility Month
Sandton Road Closures During Eco-Mobility Month

From 1 - 31 October 2015, Sandton CBD will undergo significant changes as private vehicles are restricted as part of the Eco-Mobility World Festival Sandton. This month-long event will transform Sandton into a vehicle-free zone, raising awareness about eco-friendly, sustainable transport alternatives to fossil-fuel-based options.

Eco-Mobility Festival Sandton: A Car-Free Transformation

The Eco-Mobility Festival Sandton is an international event designed to promote “eco-mobility” and demonstrate how public transport, cycling, and walking can be safe, efficient, and enjoyable alternatives. This transformation will result in Sandton road closures across several main routes, impacting Sandton CBD traffic as the area becomes a hub for eco-mobile transport.

Road Closures and Access in Sandton CBD

During the festival, numerous streets in Sandton will be closed to private vehicles, with access limited to local residents. The following road closures in Sandton will apply:

Maude Street (between Rivonia and Fifth)

West Street (between Rivonia and Fredman)

Alice Lane and Gwen Lane

While these closures will affect private car traffic, note that First Car Rental’s Sandton branch on the corner of Rivonia and South Road will remain accessible throughout Eco Mobility Festival Sandton.

Alternative Transport Options During Eco-Mobility Month

With the Sandton CBD traffic updates encouraging a shift from private vehicles to more eco-friendly modes, various alternative transport options are available to make navigating Sandton easy and efficient:

Park and Ride facilities from major centres to the Sandton CBD.

Tuk-tuks, pedicabs, and electric vehicles to move around the district conveniently.

An expanded Rea Vaya bus network serving Sandton.

150 new Metrobuses with environmentally friendly combustion systems, with many existing buses being upgraded to run on natural gas and diesel.

Newly constructed bicycle and walking lanes throughout the CBD.

Arrangements are in place to ensure essential services, such as deliveries, waste removal, emergency vehicles, and accessibility for the disabled, continue smoothly throughout the festival.

The Eco Mobility Festival Sandton is a significant step toward a sustainable urban future, and the Sandton road closures demonstrate a commitment to reducing reliance on private cars. This October, experience Sandton CBD as a model eco-mobile city where transport options are accessible, safe, and green.
