Groot Winterhoek Wilderness, Western Cape
You will feel on top of the world in the Grootwinterhoek mountain range, north of Tulbagh in the Western Cape.
Featuring extraordinary rock formations and popular hiking routes, the Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Area, part of the Cape Floral Region World Heritage Site, is particularly important for protecting mountain fynbos and wildlife.

The area is rich in history, with ancient rock paintings by the San and Khoi, and the oldest farm, which was established in 1875. Early settlers used animals to transport produce and supplies between Porterville and Saron, and their tracks are still visible today.
There are many attractions in Groot Winterhoek, including walking trails, multi-day hikes, crystal-clear mountain pools, kloofing and mountain biking. The area is home to various rare and endemic floral species, as well as 100 bird species, small antelope, wild cats and few reptiles.
