Drakensberg Northern Trail Run

Set in Oliviershoek Pass amidst the spectacular Northern Drakensberg, on the border of KZN and the Free State

Drakensberg Northern Trail Run

The family-friendly trail running event offers a great weekend of running and walking for all fitness levels. You don't need to be a "trail runner" to take part, you just have to be up for spending some time on the trail in the mountains.

The event offers four distances: the 42km Skymarathon, which is the first race on the South African Skyrunner Series; a 20km; a 10km and a 5km.

With stunning views of the Drakensberg, the Skymarathon is a serious challenge over diverse terrain. The course takes runners along the Drakensberg ridge line, criss-crossing through mountain peaks and sandstone valleys. The race reaches its highest point after a very steep and sharp climb at 2341m.

The 20km trail run also calls for a good effort to make it to the finish line. At the start, the course traverses the edges of Sterkfontein Dam and the Northern Drakensberg's majestic sandstone cliffs. The second half transitions back into KZN-type vegetation.

The 10km run is much easier and can be easily tackled by intermediate and advanced trail runners, while the 5km route is suitable for everyone with its gentle ups and downs.
