Getting Adams his Comrades Marathon Medal
June 2018 - First Car Rental was proud to be the official support vehicle provider for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) sufferer, Grant Adams, and his team, for the 2018 Comrades Marathon.
Adams, who was diagnosed with MS 11 years ago, is no longer able to work, play golf or run, and even little things we all take for granted such as walking downstairs, are made extremely difficult due to relentless pain and fatigue.
The idea of competing in The Ultimate Human Race - the Comrades Marathon - was conceptualised when his friend, Andrew Murray, asked Adams what he missed most due to having the degenerative disease - one of those things was a Comrades medal.
Grant Adams along with Andrew Murray and a group of friends completed the 2018 Comrades Marathon. Adams became the first person with MS to complete the gruelling 90km race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
The pair went to work immediately to realise the dream, and to raise funds for the one thing that may slow down the disease. The team consisted of nine people, with Murray being the only one allowed to push Adams in a custom-made three-wheel stroller.
The duo qualified for the Comrades Marathon at the Pietermaritzburg Marathon. They also completed the Deloitte Marathon and the Durban City Marathon, all in preparation for the 90.2km ultra-marathon on 10 June 2018.
Adams, along with Murray and a group of friends, successfully finished the 2018 Comrades Marathon down run on the 10th June 2018, and Adams realised his dream of a Comrades medal.
Currently, there is no cure for MS. Adams only hope of stopping the progression of the disease is to undergo Autologous Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (AHSCT), a bone marrow transplant that aims to 're-boot' the immune system so that the self-reactive immune cells attacking the nervous system are removed.
