Soccer City – Johannesburg

Soccer City, also known as the FNB stadium is located in the Soweto area of Johannesburg, the City of Gold. This 2010 stadium has been earmarked to host two very exciting matches during the World Cup – both the opening match as well as the final, which is sure to be a very festive occasion.

It has been characteristically designed to have the outer appearance of a calabash, a traditional African pot. Aesthetically, it is suited to South African culture in its design which features earthy colours, inspired by African pottery. There is an intricately assembled mosaic of a fire which lights up with a ring of lights that run around the bottom of the structure. This arrangement simulates the metaphorical calabash pot burning in the warmth of a fire.

The previous Soccer City Stadium underwent a major upgrade in preparation for the influx of people expected to visit in 2010. The upper tier was extended around the stadium, increasing Soccer City’s seating capacity to 94 700 for the soccer showcase event. All seats in the stadium are located within 100 metres of where the action will take place and visitors will be glad to know that there are no restricted views in this phenomenal 2010 stadium.
