Table Mountain Cableway
Heading up the Table Mountain cableway way gives you a unique perspective as you ascend from the lower cableway station on Tafelberg road which is 302m above sea level, to the plateau at the top. Just park your rental car in the free parking lot and get going on your adventure! |
|
During the 5 minute trip, you’re afforded an incredible view of the city of Cape Town, the harbour of Table Bay as well as world heritage site, Robben Island. The cableway has been in operation since 1926 and has since attracted more than 20-million visitors.
In the past few years, the cable cars have undergone extensive upgrades, and now boast the capacity to take up 65 passengers at a time. To add to your experience, they rotate, so get those cameras ready!
The Table Mountain cableway self-service restaurant provides an ideal stop to enjoy a meal or a glass of wine, and on hot days – the kiddies can also enjoy a cool ice-cream. There’s also a souvenir shop atop the mountain, where you’ll find all sorts of goodies to take home as mementos – including t-shirts, mugs, books and post cards.
Table Mountain cableway costs are: R160.00 (for an adult’s return ticket) and R80.00 (for children from 4 -17, return). If you’d like more info or to book your tickets online, please visit the official Table Mountain tours site.

Table Mountain Hikes
For those looking to get some exercise and fresh air, embarking on a Table Mountain hike is a great way to spend a day. What a rewarding experience it is to finally make your way to the top and take in the magnificent views. There are a variety of different trails and paths mapped out but a straightforward and direct ascent is via Platteklip Gorge which lies in the middle of the ‘table’.
As well as hiking, the terrain that makes up the Table Mountain National Park lends itself well to rock climbing. Keep an eye out for the likes of other mountain residents, including dassies, porcupines, mongooses, snakes and tortoises.
When leaving for a Table Mountain hike or rock climb, remember to wear proper walking shoes, carry your own water, wear sunscreen or a hat and plan your trip well within daylight hours. Remember that you can also take a trip back down on the cable car after you’ve hiked up Table Mountain.
