JOHANNESBURG, GAUTENG, 4 FEBRUARY 2010.
“We came, we saw, we canned,” is Broughton Amiss’s mantra.
The Thebe Tourism Group Retail chief operating officer is the man behind the country’s first “canned produce” retail outlet, Yes We Can, at Cape Town International Airport.
However, these are no ordinary cans; they represent a new retail concept that offers shoppers a wide selection of gifts packaged and sealed in different-sized cans, complete with personalised gift labels.
“The concept is simple and can be adapted across a broad range of gift ideas,” says Amiss.
Yes We Can gifts cost between R100 and R500 and include: beaded spoons, South African flags, FIFA 2010 World Cup™ memorabilia, toys, decor items, sweets, sophisticated jewellery, soaps, African teas and novelty items.
The outlet aims to provide tourists and locals with a one-stop shopping experience. Some cans are pre-packed with carefully chosen gifts, while others can be filled by shoppers according to their preferences.
The in-store selection caters for a variety of occasions, from Mother’s Day to Valentine’s Day, and includes gifts for avid sports lovers, kids, or tourists looking for an out-of-the-ordinary South African memento.
Launched at Cape Town International Airport, the first Yes We Can retail outlet has been well received by the public. A second store is due to open at Durban’s new King Shaka Airport in April this year.
