Known as the Platinum Province, the North West produces more platinum than any other single area in the world. Rent a 4x4 in Rustenburg and take a day-trip to the Pilanesberg National Park; the nature reserve is set in the bowl of an extinct volcano that erupted 1.3-billion years ago; leaving three concentric rings of hills at its boundary.

Described as forming the southern part of the Kalahari Desert, the North West Province offers almost year-round sunshine. Bordering Botswana in the north, the Free State and the Northern Cape provinces in the south, and the Limpopo Province and Gauteng on the northeast and east, the dry African climate is truly unique. Covering 118,797 sq km, the North West Province was created in 1994 by the merger of Bophuthatswana, one of the former bantustans (or black homelands as they were known) and the western part of Transvaal, one of the four former South African provinces.

Important historical sites in the province include Mafikeng, the traditional capital of the Barolong people. The name Mafikeng means "The place among the rocks" and was given to the capital of the North West province by the early Barolong chiefs. Mafikeng attracted the attention of the world's media during the Siege of Mafikeng when a small British garrison held out against the Boer forces for 217 days.
