First Car Rental Supports International Documentary 'Girlz Kickin' Hiv!'

First Car Rental was approached by German-based production company High5Films to provide the necessary transport for the filming of Girlz kickin´HIV! prior to, during and after the 2010 World Cup.

This feature is the Diploma graduation film of the director and cinematographer Patricia Lewandowska at the Film Academy in Berlin (dffb).

Girlz kickin´HIV! is a documentary about young girls in South Africa who use the power of street soccer in the fight against HIV and Aids. The film deals with their vitality and courage both arising despite the difficult circumstances they live in.

The picture aims to show the necessity of the young and vulnerable to develop their own personalities and ‘life skills’ – all whilst letting the audience take part in their ways of learning to win and learning to lose. Heroines they may be, reality is ever present in the midst of it all, as they journey through their teenage problems and the ongoing fight for prevention and safety.

The purpose of the Freedom Revolution Unicycle Tour was to raise awareness for the Bob's for Good Foundation. Former Springbok rugby captain Bobby Skinstad and his team of “Fun-raisers” want to see a South Africa where every child owns a good quality pair of school shoes. With over 7 million children in need of shoes, The CounterBalance Trust aims to help achieve this goal by donating no less than 2000 pairs of shoes through the Bob's for Good foundation: a pair of shoes costs R100.

Donations can be made by following the prominent links on www.CounterBalance.co.za. The aim of this endeavour has been make an appeal to the public and to business for donations.

WET NOSE - A 'RIGHT TO LIFE' ANIMAL SHELTER

Wet Nose Animal Rescue Centre is a registered "right to life" organisation that is involved in the rehabilitation of abandoned, neglected and abused animals. Animals in their care are not put to sleep, they stay with Wet Nose until they can get a new home.

Should an animal be in such a bad state that it cannot be rehabilitated or in severe pain and suffering then their vet will humanely put the animal to sleep.

Once rehabilitated these animals are available for adoption into new loving homes. They give dogs, cats and horses a safe refuge until they have found them a loving new home or reunited them with their worried owners.

Many of the animals at Wet Nose have been hurt by their experiences, so Wet Nose often have to spend time helping them overcome problems they've developed as a result of abuse.

Wet Nose vets treat animals against disease and treat any problems at the veterinary clinic; kennel hands provide everything from hearty meals to cuddles; and volunteers take their dogs for long walks. Wet Nose also offer to re-home your pet should you be unable to accommodate it any more.

They offer a support group service for owners in distress relating to pet issues. They also assist by advising on animal behavioural problems.

Tracy Forte founded Wet Nose in April 1999. She started with a dream - to ensure that healthy animals get a second chance in life, and making sure that they receive love and care whilst waiting for their Silver Lining. Wet Nose is run by a Board of Directors, a committee and is audited annually. Wet Nose started rescuing animals from Zimbabwe in June 2000.

Thousands of animals have been re-homed or reunited back with their families, some as far as Australia and the United Kingdom. There are many happy stories of rescued animals at the Wet Nose Animal Rescue Centre

Akela Travels with First Car Rental
"“First Car Rental, and the rest of the CMH Group stand out as one of the most dynamic and truly service-orientated companies we've ever come across", says Akela's owner Carl.

First Car Rental is sponsoring capeinfo.com blogger, Carl, during his epic 'Travels with Akela'. The sponsorship is a First Car Rental bakkie for a year as he travel around the country with his wolf, Aleka and Kenya, a Staffordshire Terrier blogging their interesting adventures.

TEACHERS ACROSS BORDERS

Teachers Across Borders South Africa First Car Rental supports Teachers Across Borders - South Africa (TABSA) by sponsoring two vehicles for the duration of the projects in South Africa. This is great support for rural development.

What do TABSA Do
Teachers Across Borders supports teacher leaders, worldwide, with professional development opportunities and tools that connect them with information and each other so that they may play a more vital role in their communities. They focus on teachers with initiative, who are passionate about their subjects and compassionate towards children.

Workshops
The workshops are designed to demonstrate innovative techniques and methodologies for teaching maths and science to large classes, using readily available materials. The content is designed to meet and exceed the South African National Curriculum Standards.

Without upgrading the skills of educators in rural schools in South Africa, students have little hope of getting a chance at higher education.

Teacher Development

The Eastern Cape Dept. of Education has made a substantial commitment to professional development of teachers, especially from the rural areas whose everyday challenges are much greater than their colleagues from urban schools.

In the past 12 years, almost 3000 South African teachers from 4 provinces have attended the winter holiday workshops, and more than a half million learners have directly benefited from their teacher's upgraded skills.

Computer Labs
TWBSA has also set up 8 computer labs in rural schools in South Africa serving some 4000 learners. The entire project is a volunteer cause, and Yunus Peer and his teams are all full-time teachers in the USA.

They raise funds from schools, churches, Rotary Clubs, and the community in Hawaii, and are assisted in their stay here by family, friends and local businesses.

First Car Rental is proud to provide the vehicles for the team to travel to their various workshop sites in South Africa.
